How To Adopt a Dog or Cat in New York City

Don't buy a dog or cat, adopt! Pet overpopulation means many animals are killed each year. It's the number one cause of death for homeless pets. The New York City shelter is Animal Care and Control of New York City (AC&C).

AC&C is a kill shelter**, so by adopting from here you're saving a life. Pets in shelters are often stressed, so don't pass over a shy or timid animal, they may blossom in a loving home. Never return a pet to the AC&C shelter, find another home for the pet or return to a no-kill shelter.

Here's how to rescue a pet in NYC..

Prepare
Decide what type of animal will work with your lifestyle.
Do you want a dog or a cat? If it's a dog can you handle an active dog who needs lots of play time? Or do you want a quiet dog who is happy to sit on the couch with you? Do you have time and energy to dedicate to a very active youngster, or is your life more suited to an adult dog or cat? If you have children and/or other pets, plan how this new pet will fit in. Also, be prepared to spend money on food and vet care.

Method #1 - Do It Yourself
Visit your nearest AC&C shelter in person to chose your new pet. Locations are listed below.

Method #2 - Have a No-Kill Shelter Do It For You
AC&C works with a network of no-kill shelters called "New Hope Partners" who have the ability to pull a dog or cat from AC&C very quickly. Contact a New Hope Partner to have them pull the animal for you then visit them to adopt your new pet.

**AC&C is an "open-admissions shelter"
This means AC&C accepts any animal that comes through its doors, no matter what condition. Many animals are placed (adopted or transferred to other animal organizations), but the ones who are not - usually due to illness and behavior - may be humanely euthanized. AC&C is working toward the goal of eliminating the euthanasia of sick but treatable animals and placing them in loving homes.
